Study on Wrekin toilets plan

A study is to be carried out to find out whether a new visitor centre and toilets could be built to cater for the thousands of visitors to The Wrekin.

Walkers, runners and cyclists have been left caught short using the landmark after the toilets at its foot were closed about six years ago.

Now All Friends Round The Wrekin, the hill support group, has agreed feasibility studies should be carried out into either renovating and reopening the existing toilet block or building a new block and incorporating a visitor centre in the Forest Glen area.

About 30 people were at a group meeting held at Wellington Civic Centre yesterday when the matter was discussed.

The Forest Glen site has already been turned into a car park for use by the 80,000 visitors who climb The Wrekin each year.

Pete Lambert, of Shropshire Wildlife Trust, who will carry out the studies, said the toilets, which were closed a number of years ago, had suffered from vandalism and anti-social behaviour.

He said Telford & Wrekin Council was supporting the idea of having public conveniences open and landowner Peter Holt was also keen.

At the meeting it was decided to set up a partnership group to try to get toilets opened at The Wrekin.

Last year Mark Pritchard, MP for Wrekin, urged council bosses to reopen the public toilets at the foot of hill.
