Sergeant John Evans, of Ludlow Police, said: "Two HGVs that were travelling southbound had just completed an overtaking manoeuvre. A collision then occurred with a lorry travelling northbound.

"There were two walking wounded, who were okay, but one man suffered serious leg injuries. We urgently need to talk to witnesses. In particular, we need the driver of a red VW Golf-style vehicle to contact us. We think that was the vehicle being overtaken."

Daphne Lewis, spokeswoman for West Midlands Ambulance Service, said: "It appeared that there had been a glancing collision between two flat-bed trucks travelling in opposite directions, leaving the driver of one of the trucks trapped and injured."

Alan Muxworthy, Group Station Manager with the ambulance service praised the ambulance crew on scene after the crash.

He said: "I have to say the ambulance crew, which included paramedic Amanda Clee and emergency medical technician Keith Rowley, were absolutely fantastic at this incident.

"The casualty was trapped for around an hour in the wreckage and during that time they not only administered drugs and oxygen, but immobilised him, and constantly re-assured him."

Ian Clayton, operations manager for the County Air Ambulance added: "The casualty had suffered head injuries and orthopaedic injuries, with particularly nasty fractures to his legs. We flew him immediately to the trauma unit at Selly Oak Hospital."

Witnesses can contact Constable Paul Sparrow at Ludlow station on 08457 444888.
