Two of the puppies had fallen out of the bin while the other three were found inside.
The RSPCA today hit out at whoever dumped the dogs, warning that they would face prosecution if caught.
Sainsbury's duty manager Duncan Thompson said he was shocked and disgusted.
"This is a very cruel act and an inhumane thing to do," he said. "There must have been broken bottles and glass in the bin when the puppies were dropped inside. There is a CCTV camera facing the recycling area but its 50 metres away and it is hard to distinguish what people put in the bins.
"Its a happy ending, but to abandon puppies is a disgusting thing to do."
The puppies were taken into the foyer of the supermarket and given food and water.
Two members of staff have each decided to adopt one of the puppies while the other three have been adopted by a customer.
Retail park security officer Rob Cheadle said everyone involved was upset. He said: "I hope the police will be able to catch and prosecute the offender."
