Police issue update on Oswestry rape investigation

The police update comes more than a week after the alleged incident occurred

Police have released an update on their investigation into an alleged rape in a Shropshire market town.

A spokesman for West Mercia Police has said that the force is still continuing its investigation into the reported incident in Oswestry.

It comes after a man in his 20s was arrested by police and held in custody in connection with the alleged crime, but later released on bail.

It is alleged a female victim was attacked in an alleyway adjacent to Leg Street in the town centre at approximately 4.30am on Saturday, August 29.

The alleyway, known as Star Passage, was cordoned off by police over the August Bank Holiday weekend, but the cordon had been taken down by Monday, August 31.

Speaking over the August Bank Holiday weekend, Detective Sergeant Jane Harding of West Mercia Police said: “We are in the early stages of this investigation.

“Officers are in the area as enquiries continue and specialist teams are supporting the victim.”

She added: “We would urge anyone with any information to support our investigation to please call me on 01905 973762 or email [email protected]”.
