Six-hour fog warning issued for parts of the West Midlands issued by Met Office

The warning has been made for parts of the West Midlands

Drivers and commuters across parts of the West Midlands have been warned to expect difficult travelling conditions after the Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for dense fog.

The warning was issued at 4.18am on Friday, October 30, with fog expected to cause disruption during the morning rush hour before gradually clearing later in the morning.

Visibility could fall below 100 metres in some areas, making driving conditions particularly hazardous and potentially affecting bus, train and flight services.

Which areas of the West Midlands are affected?

The Met Office warning map highlights a large area of central and eastern England, with the West Midlands included in the yellow warning area.

According to the Met Office, the West Midlands locations affected are:

  • West Midlands Conurbation – covering the Birmingham area and surrounding urban communities, including Wolverhampton, Walsall, Dudley, Sandwell and Solihull.
  • Warwickshire – including towns and communities across the county.

On the warning map, the highlighted yellow area stretches across central and eastern England, with Birmingham close to its western boundary.

The warning also covers parts of the East Midlands, East of England and London and South East England.

What disruption could people face?

The Met Office says dense fog, particularly during the morning rush hour, could lead to:

  • Longer journey times for motorists.
  • Delays to bus and train services.
  • Possible flight delays or cancellations.
  • Difficult driving conditions due to reduced visibility.

Fog is expected to slowly thin, lift and clear later this morning, although some rural areas in eastern England could continue to experience fog into the afternoon.

Advice for motorists

Drivers are being urged to allow extra time for their journeys, check road conditions before setting off and make sure they know how to operate their vehicle's fog lights.

Public transport passengers are also advised to check with their travel operators for the latest service information.

The Met Office has warned that weather warnings can change, and people are encouraged to keep checking the latest forecast for their area.
