Rail passengers are facing significant disruption on the West Coast Main Line after a lorry struck a bridge between Rugby and Nuneaton, causing severe damage to the structure.

Network Rail has confirmed that the bridge in Bedworth was seriously damaged in the collision and remains closed to trains while engineers assess the extent of the damage. No injuries were reported.

Services operating between Rugby and Nuneaton are being affected, with trains facing delays and cancellations. All lines through the affected section have been blocked while inspections take place.

The crash happened at around 4pm on Thursday.

Network Rail engineering teams are on site carrying out assessments and working to determine when services can safely resume.

Martin Ball, Network Rail spokesman, said: "This collision has caused significant damage to the bridge and our teams are working hard to understand the extent. There will be ongoing disruption to train services through this area while we assess the bridge.

"We are working closely with our partners to keep passengers on the move wherever possible but anyone travelling should check on train operator websites or the National Rail Enquiries for the latest information."

Passengers are being urged to check before they travel and allow extra time for their journeys as disruption continues across the route.

Further travel information is available through train operators and National Rail Enquiries.
