A former Telford United star is to have major surgery after a freak accident left him partially paralysed with a broken neck.

Doctors told Alan Walker, who captained the team to victory in the FA Trophy in 1983, it was caused by a genetic weakness and could have happened at any time.

The 47-year-old, who played for Telford from 1978-83, damaged his spinal cord after jumping while on a coaching course in Belfast.

From hospital, Mr Walker, joint manager of Maidstone United, said: "The surgeon has told me he'll know more 72 hours after the operation on Tuesday."
