Engineer died as a result of industrial disease at a Welshpool care home, an inquest has heard
An engineer who passed away at a Welshpool care home, died as a result of industrial disease, an inquest has heard.
A documentary inquest was held into the death of Geoffrey Cooksey at Pontypridd Coroner's Court on August 26.
The inquest had been opened on May 1 2026 but adjourned for further investigations.
His Majesty's Coroner Rachel Knight in the South Wales Central Coroner Area heard Mr Cooksey was 78 when he died at The Rhallt Care Home in Welshpool on April 10 2024.
Mr Cooksey was from the Birmingham area and had spent much of his working life as a telecoms engineer.
Ms Knight heard it is more likely than not that during that period, he was exposed to asbestos. He went on to develop lung diseases including mesothelioma and pneumonia which sadly led to his death. It is more likely than not that he died due to industrial disease.
She said the medical cause of death was Bronchopneumonia as a result of Mesothelioma and she concluded Mr Cooksey died of industrial disease.
Mr Cooksey was born in Smethwick on December 24 1945.
He was an engineer and a widower of Dorothy May Cooksey who was a retired personal assistant and they lived in Streetly, Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands.
