Prolific Powys shoplifter banned from every Spar and Iceland shop in the UK

A prolific shoplifter has been handed a two-year Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO) thanks to efforts from the Neighbourhood Policing Team in Montgomeryshire.

Mason Cartwright, 24, from Lon Pinwydd in Newtown, was handed the CBO at Welshpool Magistrates' Court on Tuesday after he pleaded guilty to 11 counts of theft and one public order offence.

Between July and September 2026 Cartwright stole items from Iceland and Spar stores in Newtown, along with Bradleys Garage on Llanidloes Road.

He was arrested and charged on October 13.

The CBO handed to Cartwright means that he can no longer enter any Spar or Iceland stores within the United Kingdom. In addition, he cannot carry items commonly used to facilitate shoplifting in any shop, such as large empty bags or tools for removing security tags without a legitimate reason. Nor can he conceal goods before purchase, including placing items inside clothing or bags, in any shop.

In addition to the CBO, Cartwright was handed a 26-week prison sentence, suspended for 18 months.

PC Barrett, of the Montgomeryshire Neighbourhood Policing Team said: "Repeat offenders like Cartwright cause concern in communities like Newtown, and the public rightly feel frustrated by this type of offending.

"The strength of this CBO demonstrates our ongoing commitment to tackling this type of crime and protecting local businesses in Montgomeryshire.

"I'd like to thank the members of staff at the businesses involved for their assistance in us locating and apprehending Cartwright. We will continue to work closely with retailers and partner agencies to identify repeat offenders, bring them before the courts and use the powers available to prevent further offending wherever possible.

“If Cartwright were to breach the conditions of his CBO it could result in a further custodial sentence.

"If you've witnessed or become aware of any shoplifting offences, please report it to us via 101, online, or by calling 999 if it's an emergency. Alternatively, contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously by calling 0800 555111, or visiting crimestoppers-uk.org."
