Powys driver banned from the road for six months after amassing 15 points on his licence

A Powys driver who discovered he did not have insurance after a collision, has been banned from the road.

Edward Nutting admitted driving without insurance on the A40 at Crickhowell on April 14 2026, when he appeared at Llandrindod Wells Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

The 41 year old of Llanynis already had nine points on his licence and was likely to become a totter after sentencing, so he appeared at court to plead exceptional hardship.

Prosecuting, Ms Suzanne Cartwright said police were called to a road traffic collision on the A40.

Nutting identified himself and it was confirmed at the scene that he did not have insurance.

Nutting told the court he had missed one payment and he only found out at the time of the accident that he was not insured.

He said there were two cars infront of him, he glanced away from the road and one of the cars infront was stationary and the other was breaking hard as someone in front was turning left. Nutting said there was a shunt.

He told the court he was recently divorced and he was unemployed and looking for work.

Nutting said he lives with his parents in a rural area and he pays for the mortgage for his ex wife and son in London and pays maintenance. He said he goes to see his son every other week.

Nutting said he had been working as a courier and he had been deriving a small income from writing code and speculating on the stockmarket online while doing any manual jobs he could find.

Magistrates did not find exceptional hardship.

They fined him £120 and placed six points on his licence, taking his total to 15 points, making him a totter. He was banned from the road for six months.

He will also have to pay a £48 victim surcharge and £85 costs.
