'Cramped' housing plan for former village pub car park refused

The council said the development would be “cramped” and “poor quality” residential environment

A bid to build four homes on a former pub car park have been thrown out by Shropshire Council.

The plan to build four terrace homes on a car park opposite the former Saracens Head pub in Hadnall has been refused after Shropshire Council ruled the “cramped” scheme would harm the setting of two listed buildings.

The application was submitted in February this year, with the applicant describing the disused car park as an “eyesore” with “dilapidated bit-mac and numerous pot-holes”.

But planning officers ruled the scheme would create a “cramped and poor quality residential environment”, with limited garden space, “poorly configured parking provision” and the development “would not meet the reasonable expectations for family housing”.

The council also ruled the development would harm the significance of the Grade II listed Church of St Mary Magdalene and Saracens Head.

The applicant has the right to appeal the decision, which is available to view online on Shropshire Council’s planning portal using reference number: 26/00948/FUL
