South Shropshire town’s carnival returns this weekend for its 155th outing

Clun Carnival and Show dates back to the 19th century

One of the oldest carnivals in Shropshire is returning this weekend for its 155th outing.

Clun Carnival and Show dates back to the 19th century and attracts hundreds of visitors each year.

The carnival returns on Saturday (August 1) and chairman Richard Bright has promised something for everyone at this year’s event which is, according to his records, the 155th carnival.

He said: “Our carnival procession takes place at 12.30pm where we have our floats along with historic vehicles and vintage tractors.

“We also have a dog show at 2.30pm, the Clun Ukulele Band, Joey the juggler, face painting and the usual tea tent, hot dogs and burgers.”

He added that the Clun Carnival Queen, who is 16-year-old Ava Frost, will be crowned in the afternoon, while the famed big marquee will have more than 700 entries of vegetables and handicrafts.

He said the carnival was the finale to a week of events that include a treasure hunt that took place on Tuesday, a performance by Bakers Dozen at 7pm on Thursday at The Sun Inn in support of the carnival, and the Clun Carnival Canter, a 5.5-mile running race, on Friday.
