Work on Brecon active travel scheme to begin in November

Work to improve walking, wheeling and cycling connections between Brecon and Brynich Roundabout, towards Groesffordd, is expected to begin in November, Powys County Council has confirmed.

The scheme will widen the existing footway on the southern, canal side of the B4601, between the Cambrian Way mini-roundabout and Brynich Roundabout.

Most of the improved route will be shared by pedestrians and cyclists. Within the 20mph zone, the footway will remain for pedestrians, with cyclists continuing to use the carriageway.

The work will be delivered in two phases. The first phase, beginning this November, will improve the section between Cambrian Way, near Morrisons petrol station, and the Pen-y-Bryn junction. The second phase, extending the route towards Brynich Roundabout, is planned for 2027/28.

Funded through the Welsh Government Active Travel Fund and identified through the Active Travel Network Map process, the scheme aims to improve accessibility and encourage more people to walk, wheel and cycle for local journeys.

Councillor Jackie Charlton, Cabinet Member for a Greener Powys, said: “The network of Active Travel routes across the county continues to grow and we are delighted that this latest scheme in Brecon will soon be underway.

“These improvements will provide a safer, more accessible and better-connected route in and around Brecon, making it easier for people to choose to walk or cycle instead of using their car for short, everyday journeys such as travelling to work, school or the local shops.

“Traffic management will be needed while the improvements are carried out, but every effort will be made to minimise disruption. We would like to thank residents and road users in advance for their patience and cooperation.”
