The Burwarton Show joins scores of other events that will not go ahead as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

Attracting up to 20,000 visitors annually, the show, which takes place between Ludlow and Bridgnorth, was scheduled for Thursday, August 6.

Organisers had been holding on to the hope the show may take place, but the Burwarton and District Agricultural Society said the health and safety of all those involved was "paramount".

Exhibitors and sponsors set to take part are to be contacted in the coming days.

More Covid-19 coverage:

Alan Watkins, chairman of the committee, said: "I have been liaising with the management committee of Burwarton and District Agricultural Society over the last few weeks and I am very sorry to inform you that under the current serious situation that the country finds itself in with the coronavirus pandemic, we feel that we have no other option than to cancel the 2020 Burwarton Agricultural Show, due to be held on Thursday, August 6.

"It is a decision made after much debate and with deep regret. The health and safety of our members, visitors, exhibitors, stewards and volunteers is paramount to us and we feel that under the present restrictions and government guidelines it would be unwise and nigh-on impossible to attempt to hold the show.

"We know our show is a calendar highlight for many and this will disappoint everyone who loves the show as much as we do. The society would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved in our wonderful organisation and thank in advance our exhibitors and sponsors for their continuing support and understanding at this time, we will be contacting them in the next few days."

Next year's show has been scheduled for Thursday, August 5.

Mr Watkins added: "We will continue to support our rural communities however we can and we all very much look forward to welcoming you to next years’ show.

"We hope that you, your family and friends stay well during these extremely challenging and unprecedented times."
