That's the spirit – gin revolution is started in Telford

It is the time when everyone enjoys a festive tipple with friends.

And one Shropshire drinks company has now launched its own special spirit – named in honour of the county's industrial history.

Dave Goldingay of the Wrekin Brewing Company, based at The Pheasant Inn in Wellington, has invested in a state-of-the-art distillery to produce his own spirits from grain to glass.

He will be producing spirits under the label Ironbridge Spirit Company, and the first to be launched is his Revolution gin.

Gin has grown massively in popularity over recent years, abroad as well as in the UK, and Mr Goldingay hopes this craft spirit with local beginnings will soon be available further afield.

He said: "I hope the gin-loving target audience will appreciate the quality ingredients we are using, which include Wenlock Spring water.

"Grain-to-glass is the message we're emphasising, as we carefully produce it from scratch with barley, whereas most distillers buy in the base alcohol."

Bottles of the gin are now being sold in wooden boxes packed with straw to make an attractive gift.

But those who fancy a New Year tipple can enjoy a measure or two at The Pheasant and the Old Fighting Cocks in Oakengates.

Mr Goldingay is now setting his mind to the production of a single-malt whisky.

To keep his new product firmly within Shropshire, Mr Goldingay chose local design company Voodoo Design to come up with the concept for the label of the gin bottle.

Tristan King, owner of the Wellington design company beat off stiff competition to design the branding and packaging of the new gin.

Mr Goldingay himself came up with the brand name Revolution, linking the brand to the region's famous status, with Ironbridge being the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution.

And the bottle reflects this, with reference to the area's industrial past and mimicking the distilling equipment, with complicated pipes, cogs, valves and contraptions.

The label company who printed them is entering it into a national competition which will be judged this time next year.

Earlier in the year, Mr King had designed and printed personalised champagne labels for a company celebrating a landmark anniversary, but this is the first time he has created a dedicated bottle label.

Mr King said: "There's not much left to do on the design bucket list.

"I've done everything from magazines and billboards to aeroplane livery, greetings cards and caricatures of celebrities.

"This gin branding and packaging is one of the projects I'm most proud of."

Mr Goldingay already has a great deal of experience in producing his own drinks, having run the Ironbridge Brewery since 2007, which relocated a year ago to its home in The Pheasant to become the Wrekin Brewing Company.

The company produces Ironbridge Gold, Ironbridge Blonde, Wrekin Pale Ale, Best Bitter, Wenlock Stout and Cider.
