More than 25 children and parents attended the event, run by the Dogs Trust, at Market Drayton Library on Wednesday, as part of the library's offering for the Summer Reading Challenge 2017.

Alison Donald, Shropshire and Staffordshire education and community officer, entertained the children with a story written by Claire Freedman and Holly Swain, called "The Mysterious Case of the Missing Honey".

Alastair Pack, branch manager, said: "The audience were enthralled as they waited to learn if Inspector Clueless and his dog, Sniff-It-Out, would solve the mystery.

"Alison was accompanied by Bertie the dog who sat patiently throughout, until it was time to demonstrate his skills at solving puzzle boxes.

"He impressed everyone by showing off his abilities.

"The children were then offered the chance to show off their clue-sniffing skills, being blindfolded and made to use their senses to identify items, all of which were related to dogs.

"The children learned all kinds of information about caring for dogs and looking after their wellbeing.

"The event was educational and informative, as well as being a lot of fun, and at the end Bertie had a good sniff around all the children, giving them a chance to pet him and see him up close."

The library's Summer Reading Challenge runs through the school summer holidays and invites children to read six books in return for stickers, a key ring, a medal and a certificate.

The aim of the challenge is to maintaining or improving young children's reading abilities, known to dip if ignored over the holidays.

Mr Pack added: "It's not too late to sign up and take part if you want to encourage your child to read over the school break."
