St Chad's, in Shrewsbury, is holding its fifth annual fundraising Christmas tree festival until January 5.

Businesses, schools and charities can sponsor a tree. Last year more than 10,000 people visited the St Chad's to view the trees. Some are decorated in a traditional sense and some with a more modern twist.

Sponsors pick a theme and fix on the decorations and festive lights.

Schools and other groups will perform carols and seasonal music and dance at the church. David Tudor, church warden, said: "It's a special experience over Christmas and the New Year with some beautifully decorated Christmas trees.

"Last year we had 10,000 people come and see the trees and we are hoping to top that this year as we have more trees and more entertainment.

"Some of the 53 trees are between 15ft and 18ft high and have been sponsored by companies including Selfridge's in Birmingham, the National Trust, Kings Shropshire Light Infantry as well as Shropshire Horticultural Society and Shropshire Housing.

"We also have trees of about six foot tall from a huge number of other groups, businesses and charities in the town. We are very grateful to them for their support.

"We have a great programme of music throughout the event."

He added: "There will be 10 primary school choirs singing as well as various professional groups, morris dancing and carol services."
