Hundreds of re-enactors travelled from all over Britain for an annual living history event.

The castle hosted groups of re-enactors for a full two days of battle drills and living history.

Castle manager Sue Ellis said: "It is a chance for visitors to be able to travel through history to everything from the Middle Ages right through to World War Two.

"They have living history enactments and they're all dressed up and we've ended each day with a big tug of war, it's been quite fun.

"All the volunteers and workers are dressed up too in 1920s to 1960s and 1970s outfits.

"I'm not sure how many people have arrived, but it's got to be 300 or 400.

"We've got a new World War Two group this year and some new traders.

"There is also a Medieval group that weren't here last year but are back again this year, called Freemen of Gwent.

"There has been visitors of all ages and families and different nationalities, with children re-enactors right through to retired people.

"One group came all the way from Edinburgh, we get people from all over Britain."

There were also craft stalls selling crafts throughout the ages including jewellery, leather and crafts, and Whittington Castle had a sweet trolley.

Mrs Ellis said: "We had a full program each day, there was something going on every hour or half hour.

"Families can get involved in being drilled from someone from the Second World War.

"They also could dress a knight though the ages, everything from a Middle Ages Knight to a Second World War knight.

"There's also been archery, talks and demonstrations each day."
