Fantasy author visits Shropshire school

Imaginations ran wild when a fantasy author dropped in to talk to schoolchildren in north Shropshire.

Alwyn Hamilton visited Packwood Haugh School in Ruyton-XI-Towns to talk about her novel, Rebel of the Sands. Her visit inspired a whole host of fantastic, weird and wonderful ideas from senior pupils as they took part in a world building exercise under her guidance.

Catherine Hammond, from Packwood Haugh, said the session elicited an enthusiastic and eclectic response.

"They came up with a bizarre land – a futuristic society governed by a ruling class of Samurai warriors and set in a hot, desert climate," she said.

Alwyn also spoke to pupils in years six to eight about the inspiration behind the book, including the stories she read as a child and the art she studied at university.
