The first snowdrops of the season have begun to emerge at Attingham Park.

Dotted around the grounds of the country estate in Atcham, near Shrewsbury, the early snowdrops are beginning to make an appearance as the effect of the mild winter brings out the blooms earlier than usual.

As snowdrop season begins, the woodland floor will soon be transformed into a carpet of white.

Duncan Threadgold, parkland gardener at Attingham, said: "It's like finding hidden treasure when you stumble across a new cluster of snowdrops appearing through the leaf litter. This year, the mild winter weather has brought our snowdrops out two weeks early, but there are still plenty of snowdrops due to emerge throughout the season."

The estate has published a snowdrop leaflet to help visitors to find the best flower-spotting locations. Blue-tipped markers have also been placed around the Mile Walk to help navigate around the site.

On the evenings of February 18, 19 and 20, visitors can experience the snowdrops in a different light. Snowdrop Evening Walks will see the snowdrops in the woodland and the Walled Garden illuminated by candle light, projections and coloured light displays. At 6pm and 7pm, visitors will get the chance to take a stroll up the Mile Walk towards the Walled Garden and playfield while soaking up the magical atmosphere.

Warm mulled wine, apple juice and hot food will be available throughout the evening from the Greedy Pig.

Entrance will be at timed intervals and all tickets must be booked in advance. Tickets are available online, through Attingham's website or over the phone, by calling the National Trust's Central Booking Service.

Tickets cost £4 per adult, £2 per child and a family ticket is £10, including National Trust members, and there is also a five per cent booking charge.
