Shropshire zoo in Cheetah appeal

A Shropshire zoo hopes its bid to bring three cheetahs to the county will help with wildlife conservation of the animal.

Hoo Farm hopes to welcome the big cats as it celebrates its 25th anniversary. The zoo is aiming to raise the £10,000 needed to build a new enclosure for the cheetahs, which it is hoped will be in residence by August 2016.

These will be the first cheetahs at the farm under the Hoo Cheetah Conservation Project. Construction is due to begin in March.

Becky Dorrell, head keeper at Hoo Farm said: "It is our 25th anniversary this year, and introducing one of Africa's best loved big cats to our growing worldwide collection is a great way to celebrate."

Over the last few years, the wild population has dropped by 90 per cent and it is feared there are now fewer than 250 Northern Cheetahs left in the wild.

Hoo Farm's cheetahs will be part of a breeding programme, and they will act as an ambassador for their wild cousins.

Local businesses are also supporting the project. 360Skylens, based in Telford, have donated their time and skills to produce a video for the cheetah appeal.

Andy Cunningham, videographer at Skylens said "It's amazing to hear what Hoo Farm are trying to achieve. We are really supportive of Will Dorrell and his team's efforts and I can't wait to take some video of the Hoo Farm cheetahs".
