Bridgnorth's rugby club takes over Santa's sleigh

Bridgnorth's rugby club has stepped in to take over the reins of the town's annual Christmas sleigh.

The decision to disband the town's Round Table left the future of the sleigh, a popular festive attraction, in doubt – until the responsibility was handed over to the rugby club.

This means the valuable fundraising can continue, with the sleigh raising money for the West Midlands Air Ambulance and the club's youth section.

Rugby club president Alun Stoll thanked the Round Table for recognising and trusting its ability to take over the reins.

He said: "Members of the club will make every effort to operate the sleigh as well as The Round Table has done since its inaugural first run.

"As a vibrant and successful community sports club we are proud to be given the opportunity to carry on a tradition that has been appreciated and supported by the residents of Bridgnorth and district over many years. Hopefully that tradition continues to attract local support."

The Round Table asked the rugby club to carry on with the tradition of the sleigh, visiting as many streets and areas of the town as possible during the run-up to Christmas.

The decision was taken because they have become an integral part of the town's fabric and recently won the community club of the year award.

The sleigh changed hands a week ago, having undergone a facelift courtesy of Arch Motor Services in preparation for the advent season.

Its first run under new ownership took place last Sunday, when it covered a route that started in Oldbury Wells and finished in Bramble Ridge.

The sleigh will tour through the town from the following locations: December 13, 4pm start at Ludlow Road; December 15, 6.30pm start at Lodge Lane; December 16, 6.30pm start in Broseley; December 18, 6.30pm start at Kidderminster Road; December 20, 4pm start at Victoria Road; December 22, 6.30pm start at Riverside.
