Giant snow globe in Shrewsbury

The Christmas spirit has well and truly taken over Shrewsbury as the town adopts the name "Snowsbury" for the festive period.

Over the weekend residents and visitors to the town were able to take advantage of a unique Christmas feature – a giant snowglobe place in the town's square.

The giant globe was set up by Shrewsbury's Business Improvement District (BID) and was big enough for people to stand inside and pose as the stars of their own Christmas pictures.

Complete with a snowman, fake snow, and a Shrewsbury Christmas backdrop, the globe took centre stage in The Square on Saturday and at the town's Darwin Shopping Centre on Sunday.

It wasn't the only Christmas themed attraction in the town as Shrewsbury's Old Market Hall was illuminated with snowflakes on Friday evening, thanks to media light artist Andy McKeown.

The light show was also interactive with members of the public asked to take part by winding up a projector to change the speed of the snowflakes.

Kirsten Henley, manager of Shrewsbury BID, said they had hoped people would embrace the Christmas "Snowsbury" theme.

She said: "It's a quirky and engaging theme which we can have some fun with.

"It certainly fits the town's reputation as an original one-off destination.

"It's a different take on the traditional notion of a white Christmas to promote the town's appeal for visitors and seasonal shoppers looking for a magical destination at Christmas."

The Christmas events will continue in the town throughout this month with the first 'Christmas Festival' in The Quarry on Saturday and Sunday, carols in The Square on December 16, and the Christmas Farmers' Market, also at The Square on December 19.

Ms Henley added: "We believe Shrewsbury – or Snowsbury – is the place to be this Christmas.

"The business and local community is pulling out all the stops to make it a memorable and enjoyable time for everyone to get into the festive spirit."
