Peter Brown will be the speaker when Shrewsbury, District & North Wales branch of the Inland Waterways Association next meet.

Michael Limbrey, branch chairman, said:

"Canals were the freight highways of the early years of the Industrial Revolution, built by armies of 'navigators' or 'navvies', and worked by generations of often-unlettered boatmen.

"It is no surprise the newspapers contain many stories of nefarious doings. There were breaches of by-laws, more serious crimes and other cases where the canal company was in the dock."

Mr Limbrey said: "He (Peter Brown) tells me this will be an evening of assaults, thefts, bugle-blowing and nude bathing. Today of course, our canals are more civilised, and provide great opportunities for boaters and residents and visitors who use the towpath."

Those attending the evening on Monday, November 9, can pre-book by contacting Val Haig on 07976 280174 or via email: val.haig@waterways.org.uk – by November 3, or pay by cash on the night.

The meeting, which starts at 6.30pm for a 7pm start, will be held at the Brooklands Hotel in Shrewsbury.
