Halls Auctioneers set up shop at Glansevern Hall Gardens, Refail, near Welshpool, for one day to offer advice on heirlooms and curiosities brought in by the public, all in aid of Hope House Hospice. A team of experts give their views on all kinds of items from 10.30am to 3pm on Saturday.

Speaking at Glansevern, Halls director Jeremy Lamond said: "It has been quite busy, and there has been a wide variety of things brought in.

"I have seen a George III cavalry sabre, a West African ceremonial burial mask and an early 20th century Sitzendorf porcelain monkey band – I mean a band of monkeys playing instruments, with little figurines."

Other items seen included an Victorian-era percussion cap gun in its case, a 19th century Chamberlain Worcester compote, an early 20th century cockerel-shaped car mascot which would have been mounted on the hood of a vintage vehicle, made by French glass designer Rene Lalique, and a 1905 Moorcroft vase.

But the most highly valued item was not an antique at all, he said, rather a diamond necklace and earrings that were probably no more than 10 years old – but at auction would likely fetch £4,000 to £6,000.

He said the money made for Hope House had yet to be counted. "It was £1 per item valuation, and people also gave generously, putting notes in the bucket, so we hope to have raised a good amount," he said.

Caroline Owen, owner of Glansevern Hall, said: "We're very pleased to be able to help a local charity and hopefully this will be the first of several events we do for Hope House."
