A garden centre has followed in the footsteps of The Tower of London to raise money for charity.

The Lakeside Garden and Plant Centre, in Priorslee, has created a display of poppies to help commemorate Remembrance Sunday.

The flowers, which are made of cast iron and stand about two and a half feet tall, are being sold to raise money for the Royal British Legion.

Kevin Turley, 45, one of the gardening assistants at lakeside, has a personal connection to World War One, as his great-grandfather fell during the conflict and lies in an unmarked grave in France.

He said: "The RBL do such a lot of good work for ex-serviceman and we decided that we wanted to do something to support them.

"We have strong links between Lakeside and the armed forces as the owner's son is an ex-Royal Engineer and served time in Afghanistan between 2012 and 2013. Kevin said that the idea for the poppy display came from the stunning ceramic sea of poppies created at the Tower of London last year.

He said: "Obviously ours is on a much smaller scale, as we only have 100 poppies in a wooden enclosure, but the public reaction to it has been amazing."

The poppies will remain on show until the end of November and the flowers are available to buy for £6.99 each, with £2 being donated to the RBL.
