‘I made a lot of cakes’: Shrewsbury Girl Guide shares fundraising journey with Rotary club
Rotary donation helps Shrewsbury student achieve adventure goal
A Girl Guide has told a Rotary club how she found fundraising for an international camp ‘quite hard’ and ‘I made a lot of cakes.’

Lucy Oliver, 13, of Shrewsbury, was guest speaker at Shrewsbury Severn Rotary Club who had given her a donation of £100 towards her fundraising for ‘My Adventure to Northern Ireland’.
“I am very grateful for the £100,” said Priory School student Lucy whose Rotary donation enabled her to achieve her target of raising £820 for the trip.
She had less than 12 months from the time she was selected to raising the money for the five-night stay which included visiting Carrickfergus, Carrick-a-Rede Bridge, The Giant’s Causeway and St. George’s Market, Belfast.
Lucy told Rotarians she had visited a gaol ‘which she didn’t like very much’ - because she doesn’t like prisons.
There were 24 Guides and four leaders on the trip, prior to which she didn’t know anyone.
She added that in addition to the Rotary donation she raised money by watering plants for a friend while they were on holiday and made cakes for different people.
Said Rotarian Johnathan Callwood, president of Shrewsbury Severn Rotary Club: “It’s lovely that we were able to help Lucy achieve that which can only do good things for her confidence.”
