Giant knitted poppy cross brings Remembrance message to life in St Georges
Members of a Telford community group have spent six months knitting hundreds of poppies to create a striking cross in tribute to those who lost their lives in conflict
A giant cross made from hundreds of individually knitted poppies has been created by members of Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin’s Community Cuppa group in St Georges, Telford, as a special tribute for Remembrance Sunday.

The striking handmade display has been lovingly created by members over the last six months, with each individual poppy knitted by hand before being brought together to form the large cross.
The creative masterpiece was very much a group effort with leader Karen Turner and every member contributing. However, the project has been about much more than crafting. It is a heartfelt way of ensuring that the sacrifices made by those who lost their lives in armed conflicts are remembered and honoured.
Claire Fishlock, Senior Service Development Officer at Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin, said: “Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday always give us an opportunity to pause and reflect on the sacrifices made by so many people who gave their lives in service to our country. We are incredibly proud of our group for creating such a beautiful and meaningful tribute. Every knitted poppy represents time, care and thought, and together they have created something truly special that will help keep the spirit of Remembrance alive within our community.”
The knitted poppy cross is now on display at the group’s new home, Old Gower School House in St Georges, following the group’s move there last September.
The group meets on the second Tuesday of every month, from 11.00am until 12.30pm. For a contribution of just £2 members can enjoy knitting and other crafts or simply enjoy a hot drink and the chance to make new friends.
