The Tottenham defender comes into the side because of injuries to Reece James and Jarell Quansah.

Djed Spence was given the nod at right-back as England made three changes for their last-32 clash with the Democratic Republic of Congo in Atlanta.

The Tottenham defender comes into the side because of injuries to Reece James and Jarell Quansah. He replaced Quansah in Saturday’s group stage win over Panama after the Bayer Leverkusen man twisted his ankle.

Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice returns to the midfield having not been risked against Panama as he nursed a calf knock.

Rice resumes his partnership with Elliot Anderson, with Jude Bellingham returning to the No.10 position and Morgan Rogers dropping out.

Noni Madueke also returns to the starting XI in place of Arsenal team-mate Bukayo Saka on the right of the attack, with Marcus Rashford keeping his place on the left.

Spence’s selection at right-back allows Thomas Tuchel to keep his favoured central defensive partnership of Ezri Konsa and Marc Guehi, with Nico O’Reilly continuing at left-back.

Harry Kane will lead the attack as he aims to keep on the coat-tails of the world’s best stars in the race for the Golden Boot.

The Bayern Munich striker became England’s record World Cup goalscorer with three in the group stage, but he is still behind Kylian Mbappe, Lionel Messi (both 6), Erling Haaland (5), Ousmane Dembele and Vinicius Jr (both 4).

England will have to travel to Mexico City to play the host nation at the Azteca Stadium if they win in Atlanta.

DR Congo, who drew 1-1 with Portugal in the group stage, named West Ham defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka in their starting line-up.

The London-born full-back was called up to the England squad in 2019 but withdrew through injury and switched allegiance in 2025.

Newcastle’s Yoane Wissa leads the line for the African side.
