Tom Cannon was also on target for the Blades.

Chris Wilder praised the “outstanding” Romelle Donovan after his winner gave Sheffield United a deserved 2-1 win at Blackburn in the Carabao Cup second round.

The Blades dominated the first half and Tom Cannon’s lofted finish gave them a half-time lead that Dapo Afolayan spectacularly cancelled out with a curling 55th-minute strike.

But Donovan was dangerous all night and struck the decisive blow in the 81st minute by tapping home his first for the club after Tyrese Campbell hit a post.

Wilder said: “Delighted for Rom. Thought he was outstanding all night. Brilliant for him to get his goal, fully deserved. His recovery run in the 93rd minute when he’s chasing their full back, putting everything on the line for his team, was first class. He’s going to be up and down.

“Exciting player to work with and looking forward to working with him for the remaining part of the season.”

Tony Mowbray said there were positives for Blackburn after handing senior debuts to academy graduates Harvey Pates, Lucas Houghton and Frank Vare.

He said: “I thought we struggled a bit first half, we didn’t get to grips with the game. I think second half was more like us, I recognised the team more. Yes, I think there were a lot of postiives regarding the young players making their debuts. Three debuts tonight and five or six academy players on the pitch at the end.

“It’s not the end of the world for us.”
