Tom Watkins’ side backed up their 9-5 midweek success at home to Bristol Pitbulls with a weekend double against Solway IHC and Peterborough Phantoms in NIHL National.

Both clashes ended in 4-1 victories in favour of Tigers, with veteran club hero Scott McKenzie in excellent form in front of goal.

McKenzie, 40, netted one in Saturday’s home success over his compatriots from Solway before he lashed in a hat-trick on the road in Peterborough on Sunday evening.

Also on target in front of the home supporters against the Scottish visitors on Saturday were Callum Field and Tate Shudra, who turned the scoreline on its head after the visitors’ Jonathan McBean netted on just 13 seconds. McKenzie made it three to finish the first period before Deakan Fielder’s fine fourth with eight minutes left.

McKenzie lit it up in Cambridgeshire 24 hours later to open the scoring at Phantoms and made it two on the power play after half hour.

Peterborough hit back with a power play goal of their own through Luke Ferrara while Jeremy Michaud was penalised for roughing.

But Rhodes Mitchell-King fired in a powerful effort from the blue line for 3-1 with less than two minutes of the second period remaining.

Phantoms pushed in the closing seconds with an empty net, allowing McKenzie to slot in for his treble from range.

It was a memorable night on the road for Tigers, whose team bus would not start after the win, so pizza and drinks at a snooker club made do until two new batteries arrived for the ride home.
