Nathan Shi gives Wolves Women backing after historic WSL2 promotion

The Wolves chairman was in the stands to watch Wolves Women’s historic promotion.

Wolves Women made history on Monday as they earned promotion to the Women’s Super League Two for the very first time.

A goal from Charlotte Greengrass was enough for Wolves to edge past Plymouth at the Pirelli Stadium.

The historic moment comes just a year after the women’s team were hit by the news that former Wolves chairman Jeff Shi had failed to apply for a tier two licence, despite the side battling for promotion.

Fast forward 12 months and things have changed. Promotion has been secured, with boss Dan McNamara describing the achievement as ‘life changing’.

And after the fiasco with the former chairman - new chairman Nathan Shi was in the stands to watch Wolves claim promotion.

Shi, who came in earlier this season, has earned plaudits for moves such as reducing season ticket prices.

However, he came under some fire over the weekend, with a Wolves fan videoing him and asking him questions about the incident that occurred in the South Bank over the weekend, during Wolves’ 1-1 draw with Sunderland.

Shi celebrated with the players after the game - and speaking on the Wolves website, he insisted the club now want to build on the success and allow McNamara’s side to thrive at a higher level.

He said: “This is a historic moment for Wolves Women and everyone connected to the club. To secure promotion in such a high-pressure game is a huge achievement, and I’m proud of the players, Dan and all of the staff for what they have delivered this season.

“The commitment, resilience and togetherness shown by this group has been outstanding. They deserve enormous credit for the standards they have set over the many consecutive seasons that they have been punching above their weight in this league, battling to the end against professional sides on a number of occasions.

“Today is a moment to celebrate, and an important step in the journey of Wolves Women.

“With our move to a professional model next season, we hope to build on this success and give the team the platform to compete and thrive at a higher level.”
