West Brom duo receive Championship award nomination

Baggies boss has led an unexpected turnaround in results in the Championship relegation dogfight - with defender flourishing having moved centrally.

Albion duo James Morrison and George Campbell have been nominated for Championship awards for March.

The Baggies are unbeaten in six games, a run of form enough to put four points between themselves and the dotted line in the second tier with five games left.

Head coach Morrison, in place until the end of the season, has inspired the longest run of form since Tony Mowbray led Albion to a six-game unbeaten Championship run between February and March last year. It was followed by five defeats in six and Mowbray was dismissed.

As a result Morrison has been recognised with a nomination for the division’s manager of the month alongside three other contenders.

Matt Bloomfield, in charge of fellow relegation battlers Oxford, and promotion seeking Frank Lampard of Coventry and Tonda Eckert of Southampton are also nominated.

Morrison, 39, guided Albion to a haul of eight points from four games unbeaten in the month. March ended with back-to-back wins for the first time since August against Hull and Bristol City.

Key to the turnaround in form has been United States defender Campbell.

Last summer’s recruit from Montreal in Canada has spent much of his debut Hawthorns campaign out of position at right-back but Morrison switched him to the heart of defence early in this tenure.

Campbell has flourished since and helped his side to consecutive clean sheets in March.

Moreover, he has also been a key figure in the final third. He atoned for an unfortunate own goal in the draw at Sheffield United with a rocket from distance to equalise.

Campbell then also netted the crucial headed winner at Ashton Gate prior to the international break. That was the defender’s third goal in six games as he proved a vital attacking threat for Morrison’s side.

Other player nominations are Derby’s former Albion loan defender Matt Clarke, Millwall frontman Josh Coburn and Southampton goalkeeper Daniel Peretz.

Winners will be confirmed on Friday.
