Former West Brom frontman Jason Roberts returns to sit on club's board

Former Albion promotion-winner returns to club two decades later at boardroom level.

Former Albion striker Jason Roberts has been appointed to the club’s board as a non-executive director.

Roberts, 48, will join chairman and owner Shilen Patel, chief financial officer Ethan Gobetz and executive director Mark Miles on the board at The Hawthorns.

The former Grenada international has a full-time position as director of development at Concacaf, the governing body of north and central America and the Caribbean game.

Roberts spent three-and-a-half years as a player in the Black Country between the summer of 2000, when he was a £2million club-record signing from Bristol Rovers, and a departure to Wigan in January 2004. He scored 27 goals in 101 appearances for the Baggies.

In representing Albion in built on Roberts’ affiliation with Albion given the striker is the nephew of the late legendary forward Cyrille Regis.

His newly-appointed role on the board at The Hawthorns is not a day-to-day operations position but will see the former Baggies frontman work with fellow board members on club strategy, bringing with him an extensive background of English and international football experience.

Roberts said: “I am delighted to be joining the board of the club that is such a huge part of my family’s history.

“This is an important moment for the football club, and I am honoured to contribute to shaping its strategic direction for the future.

“Since retiring from playing, I have gained significant experience working at board level, and I now look forward to applying that experience in support of a club that holds deep personal meaning for me.”

Roberts’ relationship with Albion owner Patel dates back to the latter’s 2024 takeover to when Roberts lived in Miami and the pair first made contact. Roberts is now based in Jamaica but attended recent Baggies clashes against Sheffield United and Southampton and is set to do so before the end of the season.

Roberts launched the Jason Roberts Foundation in 2007, which supporters marginalised communities in the United Kingdom and Caribbean. He was awarded an MBE for services to sport and community in 2010.

The ex-striker, who also represented Portsmouth, Wigan, Blackburn and Reading in the Premier League, will continue boardroom roles with Concacaf and Global Institute of Sport.

He will also continue close work with United Nations - where he helps spearhead a ‘Football for Goals’ initiative.

Patel added: “Jason’s journey with the Albion has been a lifelong one and it continues with him joining our board.

“He will lend his experience as a footballer, an executive, and as a person who has known this club across eras and generations.

“Jason’s enthusiasm to play a role in the club’s future has been clear from our first conversations, and I am excited for him to join us.”
