West Brom captain George Campbell earns United States international call after fine club form

It is just the defender’s second senior international call.

Albion captain George Campbell has been rewarded for his club form with just a second senior international call with the United States.

The American won his only cap - where he featured for just two minutes in a friendly against Venezuela - in January 2025 with former club Montreal, six months before his move to England.

But the skipper’s performances in the heart of defence for James Morrison’s side have caught the eye of USA boss Mauricio Pochettino ahead of a quartet of friendlies.

Albion head into the international break after Sunday’s Black Country derby showdown at Wolves and Campbell’s nation face non-competitive fixtures against Peru, Chile, Mexico and Canada.

The latter, in the early hours of Wednesday, October 7, is just three days before the Baggies return to action against Birmingham on October 10.

Campbell, 25, said of his international call: “I’m super proud. I tried a lot last year to get into the squad leading into the World Cup.

“Obviously I didn’t manage it but it was only motivation leading into this season. You are with your club 95 per cent of the time and the focus then is here.

“But obviously as a player it’s a dream to be a part of the national team. You have it in the back of your head you want to perform for your club to be in the national team.

“I want to get the win for the club on Sunday and I said to one of the coaches here that I only get into that international zone when going away.”

Albion’s international call-up recipients is set to enter double-figures by the time all are confirmed.

Boss Morrison plans to give his troops a well-earned breather early in the first week of an extended three-week international period.

Campbell returned to his Atlanta home during the summer’s World Cup and was able to sample some of the north American atmosphere during the showpiece.

Campbell, who moved into his natural centre-back role under Morrison, added: “In the back of my head I’ve always wanted to go back.

“But it’s a matter of time. Last year I wasn’t in my strongest position for most of the year, at right-back, but even then it was just about doing my best - it was all I can do.

“Hopefully my family can come to one match over there in Orlando. Other than that they’re pretty spread out!”
