Sheffield Wednesday v West Brom: Party for fans but not for James Morrison - only focus

Albion head to Sheffield Wednesday looking to finish of their season in style.

Ask Albion fans a few weeks ago about their thoughts heading into the final game of the season - and most of them would have been dreading it.

With the relegation dogfight in full swing and a points deduction hanging over their heads - it was all set up for a final day showdown.

Fast forward to now and there is be no such anxiety, no concern and there will be no checking other results when the game kicks off at Hillsborough on Saturday lunchtime.

With survival secured last week - it is more about celebrating than anything else.

The serious and strong line to this is a club like Albion should not be celebrating survival in the Championship - that shouldn’t be happening.

Especially when you’re heading into a season looking to secure a play-off spot.

But given what has happened, the dreadful away run under Ryan Mason that ultimately ended in his sacking - before Eric Ramsay rocked up at The Hawthorns.

That didn’t work and sent Albion on a spiral towards League One. Many had given up before James Morrison waved his magic wand and managed to get a tune out of Albion.

In a season of so many lows and not many highs - there is no reason for Albion fans not to be in carnival mood at Hillsborough.

But when the dust settles on the game and the season - there will be a realisation and strong message that this cannot happen again.

The game comes after it emerged Morrison is set to land the permanent job at The Hawthorns - and no one can really argue against that decision.

It was a tap in that Bilkul and Shilen Patel just couldn’t afford to miss on the back of some of their decisions this season.

For Morrison, who for the time being remains the ‘interim’ manager of Albion - he won’t be heading to Hillsborough in a party mood.

As has been the case for the time he has been in charge, it will all be about focus and finishing the job off.

The job of survival is done, but he wants more, he wants eleven games unbeaten to end the campaign.

And the odds will be stacked in Albion’s favour given Sheffield Wednesday’s failure to record a home win so far this season.

Morrison and his staff will be doing everything in their power to ensure standards don’t slip.

That is why Albion will no doubt go full tilt at Hillsborough. No tinkering, no testing players out or giving the youngsters a run out from the start.

It will be full throttle Albion, as it has been throughout this run. And if they start like they did against Ipswich last week, they could roll the home side over.

The only decision he will have to make is up top, and the two out of contract strikers who have come in and out in recent weeks.

Josh Maja and Daryl Dike could both depart this summer, and have interchanged in recent weeks.

They did feature together for the first time in the league against Watford - and with a bit of sentiment, could Morrison give the two a start on what could be their final game?

He may do, but there will be no sentiment. Just a focus to finish with a win.
