New West Brom duo praised for bringing good 'energy' into pre-season graft

Albion’s squad have been working double sessions since most of James Morrison’s squad reported back in late June.

New Albion forward duo Jimmy-Jay Morgan and Barney Stewart have been praised for bringing their energy to pre-season training.

Head coach James Morrison’s attacking options were freshened up early in the transfer window with the additions of ex-Chelsea youngster Morgan, 20, and Stewart, 22, from Falkirk.

The pair are in Portugal this week with new Baggies colleagues and staff where Albion players are being worked hard with double sessions in the Algarve.

Albion frontman Aune Heggebo, last season’s 10-goal top scorer, has been impressed with the duo’s impact in the early weeks of pre-season.

“I feel really good,” Heggebo said when asked about his new forward colleagues.

“Barney and JJ have been really good coming into the group. They're already showing themselves and (giving) energy into the group.

“And as well on the training pitch they look hungry and want to improve. I definitely feel good.”

Morgan, who netted 14 goals on loan at Peterborough in League One last season, wasted no time in opening his Baggies account with a penalty in the 3-0 pre-season win over Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday. He was brought down by an Owls defender after neat work.

The injury-plagued Daryl Dike was released by Albion this summer and Josh Maja, who is also out of contract, is expected to move elsewhere.

Heggebo said the double-sessions of intense running and boxing sessions have been a welcome experience of a “proper English pre-season”.

He smiled: “I feel like it's a good experience. It's like a proper English pre-season with running and double sessions on the pitch and a little bit of boxing as well we've been doing. It's a good cultural thing.”

The Norwegian, 24, added that his boxing technique is “all over the place” and highlighted defender Alfie Gilchrist as the best boxer in the Baggies squad.
