Latest on West Brom's Mikey Johnston as winger continues on comeback trail

Albion’s influential winger has not played since a serious injury in February.

Mikey Johnston has missed Albion’s pre-season tour of Portugal as he continues work back from a serious injury at the club’s base.

Johnston has not featured for the Baggies since February due to the broken ankle he sustained in boss James Morrison’s first game in caretaker charge at Oxford.

The winger has not travelled to the Algarve region of Portugal with his colleagues, it is understood.

He is continuing to work a fitness programme with club staff at Albion’s training headquarters in Walsall.

Johnston has been mixing with team-mates since players reported back for pre-season last month, but is working to his own schedule due to the severe nature of the ankle injury.

The 27-year-old has been working on his comeback throughout the summer, and carried out some solo work at the Birmingham County FA’s headquarters in Great Barr earlier in the break.

Now four-and-a-half months on from the injury at the Kassam Stadium, no exact timeframe has been given on Johnston’s return to training, or when he will be available to feature for Morrison’s side.

The Baggies head coach is likely to give more of an update on the former Celtic man after Friday’s friendly against Bromley in Albufeira.

Johnston is the sole senior absence owing to injury from the tour in Portugal.

Fellow attacker Tammer Bany has travelled as he makes encouraging progress from a setback on the final day of last season.

It is understood Bany, 22, picked up an injury in his appearance as a half-time substitute in the 2-1 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday.

Bany returned for pre-season training with colleagues, however, and has made progress in his comeback.

The Jordan international, who was not selected for the World Cup, is not yet in full regular team training but is in Portugal with colleagues stepping up his fitness.
