Former West Brom striker Josh Maja poised to switch to top flight French club after turning down offer

The striker was offered a fresh contract by Albion in May, but we revealed later in the summer he was set for pastures new.

Former Albion striker Josh Maja is set to complete a free transfer to French top flight outfit Le Havre.

The 27-year-old frontman spent three seasons at The Hawthorns but departed this summer after turning down a new contract offer from the club.

Reports in France claim Maja is set to sign a two-year contract at the Normandy outfit, with the option of a third.

Maja moved to the Baggies as a free agent in 2023 after leaving Bordeaux and had mixed fortunes in blue and white stripes, though finished as 12-goal top scorer in his second season, despite spending the whole second half of it sidelined through injury.

Injury issues also blighted his debut season in 2023/24 and continued into the final campaign, though Maja scored some important goals for James Morrison in the push for survival in the spring.

He netted three times in his final nine appearances last season, with goals in crucial contests against Wrexham, Watford and Preston which resulted in seven points.

Head coach Morrison was keen to keep Maja on board and the Baggies confirmed a new contract offer for the Nigerian in May, but it was revealed by the Express & Star later in the summer that the frontman was set to move on.

Albion were also keen to keep Karlan Grant, but the wide attacker opted to return to Championship rivals Charlton.

Maja, formerly of Fulham and Sunderland, is now poised to move to top flight football in France. He previously represented Bordeaux in Ligue 2.

Le Havre, managed by former Middlesbrough midfielder Didier Digard, finished 14th in Ligue 1 last term.

Maja scored 19 goals in 81 appearances in total for the Baggies.
