Shrewsbury under-18s keep title push on track with seventh straight win
Shrewsbury Town’s under-18s are pushing to win the EFL Youth Alliance North West league.
Shrewsbury Town’s under-18s could be crowned league champions tomorrow.
Town took another significant step towards claiming the EFL Youth Alliance North West title with victory over local rivals Walsall last Saturday.
Shrewsbury’s youth side went into their clash with the Saddlers a point behind leaders Preston North End.
Salop have been playing catch-up in recent months, having had several games in hand on Preston. However, they have now reeled in the table-toppers to give themselves a real shot at glory.
Shrewsbury swept rivals Walsall aside, winning 4-1 thanks to a brace from Haydn Lewis and goals from Jay Snook and Leon Hughes, to secure a seventh consecutive league victory and maintain the pressure on Preston, who beat Bolton Wanderers 3-1 in their final game of the season.
The win also took Salop’s tally to eight goals across their last two matches, having beaten Stockport County by the same scoreline away from home the previous week.
Shrewsbury sit second in the standings with two games remaining. They have 61 points from 29 games, with 19 wins, and are a point behind Preston.
Town are also the league’s leading scorers, having netted 79 goals so far this season.
Shrewsbury welcome Salford City tomorrow (April 28, 1pm), where they could clinch the title. They will then travel to Blackpool for their final game of the season on Saturday.
