Shrewsbury Town urged to follow Jon Taylor's lead

Shrewsbury Town boss Graham Turner today challenged his young side to follow the example of inspirational winger Jon Taylor and believe in themselves to fulfil their potential in League One.

At 21, homegrown wideman Taylor has become one of the best players in his position in the third tier and will back himself to heap more misery on tonight's Greenhous Meadow visitors Colchester, who have gone 10 games without a win.

Taylor went closest to scoring against high-flying Peterborough on Saturday when Town went down 1-0.

And Turner believes Taylor's team-mates can all look to the winger to see how much they can achieve.

"Jon's confidence is never in doubt – he's one of those bubbly characters, and, as players come through, they can take inspiration from the way Jon goes about things," said Turner.

"Jon's a confidence player – he's got to be in that position because he's got to run with the ball, take on defenders, get crosses in and score goals. Those are the attributes of a confidence player.

"Jon will never hide and he will always get himself into goalscoring positions during the course of a game.

"But it's not just the young players; at Peterborough, it was right through the team.

"The midfield section should have passed it better.

"We had the ball in good areas and we should have moved it a lot quicker and more accurately than we did.

"I don't think it's just the young lads – when we turned possession over on Saturday, we should have kept the ball better and picked out better options.

"In front of their goal – 30 yards out and closer – we looked a bit tentative and our shooting was poor with the exception of Jon, who had one shot blocked and another one which produced a terrific save from the keeper."

Turner challenged his players to get involved, adding: "They have to not hide from receiving the ball.

"We cannot become anxious. We don't want to become obsessed that we lack belief and confidence."
