Shrewsbury Town confirm academy departures including club record-breaker

Seven youngsters have left the club this summer.

Seven Shrewsbury Town academy players have left the club following the expiry of their contracts.

Among those departing is Simba Nyamwanza, who wrote his name into the club’s history books in November 2023 by becoming Shrewsbury’s youngest-ever first-team player after making his debut in the EFL Trophy.

The club has confirmed that Arnold Manseya, Jayden Valentine, William Hardeman, Haydn Lewis, Leon Hughes and John Junior Male have also left this summer.

Academy manager Charlie Musselwhite said: “The Academy has been incredibly fortunate to have had these seven players represent the club.

“Will, Simba, Arnold, JJ, Leon, Jayden and Haydn have been outstanding throughout their time with us.

“They each joined the academy between the under-11 and under-14 age groups and have enjoyed an incredible journey, winning trophies, developing as footballers and, more importantly, growing as young people.

“We have been hugely impressed by the character and maturity they have shown since being informed of the academy and club’s decision.

“They have continued to train with real professionalism, remained committed to their development and played an important role in winning the league and reaching the subsequent national finals.

“Unfortunately, this is one of the toughest parts of football, and we are unable to offer professional contracts to every player.

“However, we firmly believe we have given them the best possible platform to succeed, whether that is within the game or in another career.”

Shrewsbury Town’s under-18s enjoyed a history-making campaign last season, winning the EFL Youth Alliance North West division before claiming the overall northern crown.

Haydn Lewis, who is among those to have been released, recently spoke to the Shropshire Star about the next chapter of his career in New Zealand.

Shrewsbury say they will continue to support the youngsters as they take the next steps in their football journeys.

“It's something we're incredibly proud of that so many of our former players have gone on to enjoy successful careers, both on and off the pitch, including as coaches, analysts and strength and conditioning coaches,” Musselwhite added.

“Everyone at Shrewsbury Town wishes the lads every success for the future.”
