From the archive: When Town beat United!

[gallery] Shrewsbury Town have only ever once welcomed Manchester United to their Greenhous Meadow home - and they beat them that day!

Next Monday, Micky Mellon's Class of 2016 will welcome United for a first-ever competitive affair between the two sides in the FA Cup fifth round.

The last time both clubs met and fielded full strength teams, it was at the old Gay Meadow on 30 July 2000 when Town were drubbed 8-1 in a pre-season friendly.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Quinton Fortune both scored twice while Nicky Butt, Teddy Sheringham, Michael Clegg and David Healy also netted.

Chris Freestone's first-half header that pulled it back to 2-1 was as good as it got for Town, who wouldn't come across the Red Devils for another 11 years.

When United made their first trip to the 'new' Meadow - which opened in July 2007 - it wasn't Sir Alex Ferguson but reserve-team boss Warren Joyce who was in the away dugout.

Another warm-up summer encounter came with Graham Turner - as opposed to Kevin Ratcliffe in the previous date - in charge of the hosts.

And Turner's men enjoyed far more success than in the previous clash, running out 2-1 winners over United's starlets on 16 July 2011.

Goals from James Collins and Sean McAllister had won it for the home side by the break, despite Danny Drinkwater's second-half reply.

Drinkwater, now in the Premier League with Leicester City, partnered Paul Pogba, now at Italian giants Juventus, in the middle of the park. Darron Gibson, of Everton, was also used.

Striker Will Keane featured for United and is still at Old Trafford, coming on as a substitute in their 2-1 league defeat at Sunderland last weekend.

They couldn't stop Town making a winning start to pre-season that day, while United's second string had previously visited York City.

Wayne Rooney and the big guns were stationed on tour in America, at the time, with Town also new-look and containing a couple of trialists.

Turner ran the rule over right-back Carl Regan and midfielder Luke Summerfield, who would both go on to win contracts with the club.

New signing Reuben Hazell formed a solid partnership with Shane Cansdell-Sherriff at the back, while Joe Jacobson was reliable defensively and a genuine attacking force at left back.

Striker Marvin Morgan provided some neat touches, with Colins and Lionel Ainsworth looking particularly sharp.

The two combined for the opening goal, with Collins providing a fine finish to connect with an inviting cross from the winger.

The lead was doubled when Mark Wright crossed for McAllister, who saw an initial shot blocked before nodding home the rebound.

Both goals went past veteran shot-stopper Alan Fettis, who was 40 at the time and filled in with Tomasz Kuszczak and Joe Coll both ruled out.

After struggling in the opening opening period, United improved at the start of the second-half.

Drinkwater pulled a goal back on 49 minutes, when his 25-yard effort struck the post before the ball rebounded off the back of unfortunate goalkeeper Chris Neal and into the net.

It wasn't enough to deny Shrewsbury – who made seven changes in the final 25 minutes– a deserved victory and they went close to adding to their tally through Collins, Tom Bradshaw and Steve Leslie.
