Cowan explains why Shropshire could be a unique selling point for Shrewsbury Town this summer

Gavin Cowan has been discussing Shrewsbury Town’s approach as they look to rebuild their squad this summer.

Gavin Cowan believes the “wonderful county” of Shropshire could play a key role in helping Shrewsbury Town turn heads in the transfer market this summer.

The busy period of recruitment is well underway as Town look to finalise signings ahead of the new season.

Cowan has previously highlighted Shrewsbury’s fanbase as a major attraction for potential recruits, but also feels the local area itself can be a selling point in persuading players to make the move.

The Town boss and his staff are themselves closely connected to Shropshire, having lived locally and represented Salop at various stages of their careers.

Speaking about the club’s appeal, Cowan said: “Kevin Berkoe only recently was really vocal about how we've come in and it's the culture that he enjoys, and being around the county.

“Namely myself, I moved here 20 years ago to play for the club. It's funny how you walk through the town centre and you bump into a lot of ex-players who have come from Newcastle and London and all over the place. Everyone seems to want to stay here.

“I think there's something about the place. When you can show these prospective players

Shropshire and what a wonderful county it is and the football club and the resources and the facilities, it starts to turn heads.

“We want to try and maximise all of our attributes to convince people to come here, but they've got to want to come here.”

Cowan has repeatedly stressed the importance of commitment from prospective signings, saying he does not want Salop to be anyone’s second option.

He continued: “I won't be flirting with players who want to go and play the field and use us as their safety net. They either want to be here or they don't.

“Any players who are committed can happily come and sign if we deem them to be good enough.”
