Wounded Shrewsbury Town will hit back, says Luke Waterfall

Defender Luke Waterfall is determined to ‘put it right’ after his Shrewsbury Town debut ended in defeat.

The 28-year-old centre-half donned the armband in the weekend’s 2-1 loss at Charlton after signing from Lincoln City for an undisclosed fee last week.

Next up for Salop is a clash with League One rivals Burton Albion in the Carabao Cup, at home, tomorrow night.

“We’re still getting to know each other, how each other plays,” said Waterfall, who penned a three-year deal with Town.

“I thought there were positives to take from it but we don’t want to keep coming in and saying ‘We’ve been unlucky again’ and stuff.

“I’m sure we won’t. We’ll definitely put it right, we’ll cut out conceding sloppy goals. I’m a winner, and the boys in there are winners.

“I think there is a lot of talent in there. There’s a lot of young lads in there with lots of ability.

“It may take us a bit of time to get to know each other, but hopefully not too long and we’ll get on the right side of things, I’m sure.

“We want to put it right and the good thing for us is that there’s a game coming up on Tuesday.

“After a loss, the best thing is to get another game sharpish and hopefully we’ll come out on the right side.”

Waterfall, signed in the wake of Toto Nsiala joining Paul Hurst’s Ipswich Town, led Town out because of usual skipper Mat Sadler – and club captain Lenell John-Lewis – being on the bench.

And he insists being captain for his first game for the club did not feel weird.

“The gaffer showed a lot of faith in me,” said Waterfall.

“I was happy to take the armband. I’ve done it before – I was captain at Lincoln for two and a half years so it’s not out of the norm for me.

“If the gaffer wants me to do it, while the other lads are out, I’ll do the job well.”

Reacting to Saturday’s events, Waterfall added: “At 1-1, we shouldn’t throw it away from there.

“It’s always frustrating to concede in injury time. It’s never good, especially to concede a goal like we did.

“We should have defended it better than that and really just see the game out at 1-1.”
