The 36-year-old, who signed an 18-month deal in January, is one of five defensive midfielders in Micky Mellon's squad with new signing Gary Deegan, Abu Ogogo, Ian Black and James Wesolowski, who has yet to accept a new deal.

Wellens made 12 League appearances for Town after signing from Doncaster following a loan spell at Oldham.

Manager Micky Mellon told the club's website: "I've spoken to Richie and we've decided it's best if we make him available for a free transfer.

"I get on very well with him and felt it was best that he goes onto the next chapter of his career.

"Whether that be playing and coaching, it's worth him seeing what opportunities there are out there for him.

"It's been great to have him even for this short time but he needs to be playing and I can't guarantee him that."

Wellens's 600th League appearance came in his penultimate game for Town at Millwall on April 9.

The midfielder has started steps towards the next step of his career by coaching in the academy at home-city club Manchester United, from where he emerged as a youngster and where his son Charlie now trains.
