The Whitchurch-based bowls association held its joint AGM and presentation evening at Bridgewater BC when long-serving chairperson Christine Sayers was in the spotlight.

“A big thank you to Chris Sayers who has stepped down as chairperson after so many years - we will be forever grateful for the support and guidance offered by Chris,” said re-elected secretary Leah Marshall.

“We also say thank you to Gillian Edge, who is stepping down as president.

“Sue Griffiths has been voted in as the new chairperson and Isobel Jones will be the new president for the 2027 season.”

Marshall hailed a “fantastic night at the presentation evening” after a 2026 campaign that saw good turnouts for all three competitions.

Tina Ralph (Nantwich Park Road) won the Merit, doubles and triples to dominate the prize-giving, also winning two of her three county matches in the President’s Cup.

“Our county team has undergone some player changes this season, giving new bowlers the opportunity to experience county level without the added pressure of playing in the main competition,” explained Marshall.

“A huge congratulations to the team for their performance in the third game against Greater Manchester, where we celebrated our first win in four years.

“As we move into 2027, we must continue building on this success with our new‑found confidence and fantastic team spirit.”

Roger Haynes

Bowlers in the North Shropshire veterans association are reeling from the sudden loss of its chairman.

“It is with great sadness that we have to report the sudden passing on Thursday morning of Mr Roger Haynes, our chairman,” said the body’s secretary-treasurer Simon Fullard.

“A great servant to our leagues, he was to the fore in joining the Barlows Whitchurch over-60s and Market Drayton Senior Citizens leagues into a joint administration under the title of North Shropshire Veterans Crown Green Bowling Association.

“He was a referee and keen coach at Tilstock BC, giving help and advice to many players of our game.

“He will be sorely missed and our thoughts are with his wife Pip and family at this sad time.”

South Shropshire village club Worfield are also mourning the passing of their stalwart chairman John Preece.

His funeral is at Stourbridge Crematorium on Wednesday, November 11, at 11.40am with wake afterwards at Worfield Cricket Club.
