Champions seal big away win in title defence - Premier bowls round-up
The latest round-up of action in the county’s premier bowling league.
Defending champions Castlefields were pushed hard on a tricky away green but delivered a potentially crucial win in the title hunt.

The Shrewsbury side are on the hunt for a third successive Shropshire Premier Bowling League crown and remain in pole position, nine points clear, after a narrow victory at Burway.
Tom Palmer, with a 21-9 victory over Paul Williams, and Adrian Rowe’s 21-10 over Duncan Pressley were the biggest winning margins for the visitors on the way to a 225-205 aggregate success.
A tight evening’s action swung either way, with the head-to-head games going in favour of Burway 7-5, but the aggregate ensured Castlefields left with the winning bonus points - and extra spoils for success on the road.
Richard Lane delivered 10th-placed Burway’s best, 21-13 over Glyn Herbert.
Woore, in seventh, remain well-placed for an assault on fourth as their very impressive first season following promotion continued at Hanmer.
The north Shropshire visitors secured an 8-4 success across the border to leave third-bottom Hanmer level on points with Adderley below them, but just clear on aggregate.
Woore’s Martin Lloyd (21-5) was a biggest winner, with Andrew Moss (21-9) also on form. Mike Gilpin (21-8) recorded Hanmer’s best winner.
Castlefield’s chief chasers Sir John Bayley kept the pressure on the leaders with a hard-fought 8-4 home success over fourth-placed Ifton.
A potentially tricky evening proved just that, but the Telford hosts had enough quality for the 212-177 victory.
Paul Evans won 21-7 over Ieuan Pugh. That was the same scoreline for Ifton’s Owen Jackson over Chris Worthington.
Just nine points separate Ifton and four clubs down to Woore.
Third-placed Wrockwardine Wood are only 11 points behind Bayley and picked up a comfortable 10-2 (230-167) home success over Wem USC.
Steve Roberts (21-6) and Liam Stevens (21-7) fared well for the victors.
Rock-bottom Bylet endured a 13th defeat in 15 league contests this term but took four points from a 8-4 defeat at sixth-placed Highley.
The hosts were comfortable 231-165 aggregate winners with Jamie Taylor (21-3), John Heath (21-4) and David East (21-9) impressing. Bylet winners came via Ian Sturdy, Cheryl Caswell, Camilla Parsonage and Ian Hopson.
Adderley were well beaten 10-2 (236-162) at fifth-placed Hanwood, who had Mark Shore (21-5) excel. Adderley’s Edward Proudlove did clinch a 21-7 success.
A mid-table affair between Meole Brace and St Georges went the way of the Shrewsbury hosts in a commanding 11-1 (233-167) success.
Craig Wilson (21-6), Doug Edwards (21-7) and Andrew Whitman (21-9) were all winners to single-figure.
Castlefields visit Woore on Friday evening in a fascinating clash, while Bayley head to Adderley. Burway’s visit of Hanmer is also on the billing.
