The Castlefields king takes his place in Saturday’s finals of the £5,200 Spen Masters in Yorkshire before heading over the Irish Sea to launch his bid for a third major Manx crown.

A last 16 at the Cleckheaton club includes the bowler he rates the hardest to beat, Simon Coupe, and father and son Chris and Josh – and the 39-year-old will travel hoping for an upturn in fortunes.

His Bank Holiday weekend of finals started with a 21-20 semi-final loss to Wayne Ditchfield in the Farington Open in Preston on Saturday as Coupe won the title – and he suffered final misery next day.

That was in the John Rycroft Trophy in Skipton, a competition that means so much to him and he won last year.

He missed out on the £400 top prize by losing 21-16 to Peter Clark after only conceding 11 shots in his previous four ties.

Monday saw him in Huddersfield for the finals of the Golcar Classic, but he never got into any kind of rhythm and lost 21-8 first round to Josh Brown as Neil Bithell triumphed.

British Super Cup

Castlefields, the only Shropshire bowls club to have won the British Super Cup, are on target to do it again - and also add the Midlands equivalent.

The Shrewsbury giants, who won the eight-a-side 31-up crown in 2024, are through to the quarter-finals, but will need to beat past winners Thongsbridge to reach the finals day at a Staffordshire venue on October 11.

Premier League rivals Wrockwardine Wood still have to overcome Penn to make the last eight to earn a tie against either Wharton or Littlemoor A.

Castlefields have been paired with arch rivals Sir John Bayley in the quarter-finals of the Midlands-based Free Press Cup and Highley also have to win a 21-up five-home-five away tie against Willenhall Nordley by September 13 to make finals day the following Sunday.
