Aston Villa in talks to sign Germany international star
Unai Emery is aiming for more signings ahead of the September 1 transfer deadline.
Villa are in talks to sign former Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka.
The 31-year-old Germany international is a free agent after leaving the Bavarian giants at the end of last season and negotiations over a switch to Villa Park are advancing.
Unai Emery has been eager to increase his midfield options following the sale of Youri Tielemans to Manchester United and the loss of Amadou Onana to a serious knee injury.
The club previously held talks over signing current Bayern star Joao Palhinha, though he now looks likely to join Benfica.
Goretzka, who made more than 300 appearances during an eight-year spell with Bayern, is viewed as a player who can bring experience and quality to the squad.
Villa will also consider making a move for Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson during the final days of the transfer window, as doubts continue to surround the future of Ollie Watkins.
The latter is a target for Al-Hilal of the Saudi Pro League, who saw a £45million bid rejected on Friday.
Villa begin their Premier League season at Brighton on Sunday.
